DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, SCHOOL OF NURSING

The Position

The Director of Development for the School of Nursing is responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive development program for the School. The program incorporates both campaign and annual fundraising, with particular emphasis on major, individual, corporate, foundation, and planned gifts. This position reports to the Executive Director of Development.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plans, organizes and directs programs to secure major gifts and, on a case by case basis, coordinates the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, recognition, and stewardship of private support from individuals, corporations, and foundations to the School of Nursing.
  • Serves as the chief major gift fundraiser for the School. As such, manages 75 -150 prospects capable of making commitments of up to $100,000 or more. Develops detailed strategies and expectations on a quarterly basis for top tier prospects.
  • Serves as advisor to the Dean on fundraising matters and coordinates development activities within the School, being cognizant of the Development Office's, the UMass Amherst Foundation's and the School's needs and procedures.
  • Provides leadership for any development officers and development support staff within the School. Supervisory responsibilities include: recruitment, retention, mentoring and evaluation of staff as appropriate.
  • Assists the Executive Director of Development, the Vice Chancellor for Advancement and the Dean in the analysis, formation, and implementation of fundraising plans and policies and procedures as they pertain to the School's development program.
  • Creates and implements programs to build stronger relationships with internal and external constituencies, including alumni, parents and friends.
  • Develops a group of key volunteers through the strengthening of advisory boards for the School.
  • Develops an annual leadership gifts program, with responsibility for cultivation and solicitation of annual fund prospects in the $1,000 and up range.
  • Coordinates and supports the School's corporate and foundation gifts program through close collaboration with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations.
  • Coordinates and supports the School's planned gifts program through close collaboration with the Director of Planned Giving.
  • Stewardship of donors through ongoing communications, recognition activities, invitations to key events, and interaction with beneficiaries of their support.
  • Oversight of the School's development publications and communication materials, and consultation on other School communication vehicles as appropriate.
  • Promotes UMass Amherst priorities and image to constituents. Serves as front line staff to promote campus goals and objectives. Maintains current knowledge of institutional priorities. As appropriate, and in consultation with senior staff, cultivates and solicits prospects on behalf of other campus units.
  • Follows Development procedures with regard to prospect management and documentation of contacts. Responsible for oversight and submission of all relative fundraising reports, statistics, projections and publications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS

Demonstrates: integrity, confidence, enthusiasm, initiative, analytical ability, understanding of volunteer relations, the capacity to inspire cooperation, being a team player, understanding of the vital importance of public higher education and the breadth and complexity of a major research university, and a sense of humor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five (5) or more years of experience with demonstrated success in major gifts fundraising in a development program, preferably with an educational institution. Equivalent experience in private sector sales or marketing will be considered.
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven track record of cultivating, soliciting and closing gifts of $50,000+ required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel on a frequent basis; required to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills required.
  • Must possess strong administrative skills.
  • Management experience desired.
  • Previous experience working with senior-level executives.
  • Knowledge of prospect management systems.
  • Knowledge of database fundraising software BSR/CS Advance preferred.
  • Web fundraising experience is a strong asset.
