The Position |
|
The Associate Director of Planned Giving reports to the Director of Planned Giving and conducts campus-wide fundraising efforts in the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of planned giving prospects and donors. The Associate Director is a senior member of the Development staff and works collaboratively with all development staff, particularly school/college/unit Directors of Development of the Amherst campus.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- In coordination with the Director of Planned Giving, creates and implements planned giving programs and strategies as part of an overall major gift strategy for individual donors. Efforts focus on major areas of planned giving including bequests, gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, other planned giving instruments, and gifts of real and personal property.
- Works directly with senior fundraising staff, including school/college/unit Directors of Development, to design and implement gift planning and stewardship strategies for individual donors.
- Manages a campus-wide portfolio of 75-125 planned giving donors/prospects.
- Assists the Director of Planned Giving in the management of the William Smith Clark Society (recognition society for donors who have made planned gifts or provided for UMass Amherst in their Last Will and Testament), including special events and other stewardship activities.
- Serves as an expert source of information on planned giving for all campus development officers.
- Serves as a liaison between donors' attorneys and financial advisors; campus/university legal staff; UMass Foundation staff; and development officers, in negotiating and closing planned gifts.
- Works with Research Services and Prospect Management staff to identify potential planned gift prospects and implement long-term donor strategies.
- Assists the Director of Planned Giving in aggressively marketing planned giving opportunities.
- Follows Development Office procedures with regard to prospect management and documenting contacts. Responsible for submission of all appropriate fundraising reports and projections as they pertain to the Associate Director's portfolio.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Planned Giving.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Five (5) to seven (7) years of development experience, including planned giving experience; preferably with an educational institution.
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of planned giving instruments required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
- Strong administrative skills required.
- Ability and willingness to travel independently on a frequent basis; required to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
- Previous experience conducting face-to-face, personal solicitations required.
- Previous experience working with senior-level executives/volunteers.
- Knowledge of prospect management systems.
- Knowledge of database fundraising software BSR/CS Advance preferred.
- Web fundraising experience is a strong asset.
