The Position

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Advancement and the Dean of the College, the Director of Development serves as a major gifts officer on behalf of Ohio University. S/he will understand the various vehicles by which one can make a private gift to Ohio University including familiarity with basic IRS regulations for making a charitable gift. Working with the development office, the Director of Development will identify potential major-gift donors; initiate first alumni contact for the dean, faculty and other administrators and be the primary solicitor for the College; coordinate college annual fund campaign and gift stewardship activities; organize alumni visits; coordinate alumni/development events; and maintain office records and budget. Must be able to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit private support for Ohio University's College of Business (COB).
  • Serve as liaison between the faculty, staff and students and potential supporters (individuals, corporations and foundation).
  • Direct and maintain campus stewardship programs.
  • Serve as liaison among the faculty and staff of the Division of Advancement.
  • Plan, implement and coordinate cultivation activities for prospects and donors.
  • Initiate, develop and coordinate delivery of proposals to prospective supporters.
  • Secure dollar commitment at a level established jointly by the Dean or Department Head of the COB and the Assistant Vice President.
  • Work with the annual giving staff to plan and implement an annual giving program that includes direct mail and phonathon.
  • Work with appropriate campus offices to plan, implement and oversee stewardship programs.
  • Work with dean, faculty and staff to identify priorities and strategies for private support.
  • Interface with the external relations agents (i.e. Alumni Relations, Development and individual unit/project personnel) to coordinate events and activities involving alumni in the pursuit of identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gift prospects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Commitment to the mission of Ohio University.
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional fundraising experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills. The fundraiser must be able to clearly and succinctly communicate a wide variety of information to a diverse set of audiences.
  • A history of success in an advanced fundraising setting, preferably in academia.
  • Excellent listening, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable in a team oriented, goal driven environment.
  • Ability to function independently, yet work in a centralized development structure.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.

THE COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

Founded in 1893, the College of Business (COB) offers 10 undergraduate majors and an MBA program. It is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and enrolls approximately 1800 undergraduates and 90 resident/150 non-resident graduate students annually. The COB is organized into five units: Finance, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Management Systems and the School of Accountancy. It offers both an Executive MBA and an MBA Without Boundaries program. The faculty is comprised of more than 60 professionals, 80% of whom hold either Ph.D, D.B.A. or JD degrees.

Ohio University has more than 190,000 alumni living throughout the world. Over 50 percent of graduates live in the State of Ohio, alumni are concentrated primarily on the East Coast in New York, Washington, DC and Boston, and in the Midwest in the greater Chicago area.
