ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR GIFT PLANNING

The Position

The Associate Director for Gift Planning reports to the Director of Gift Planning. The Associate Director will serve as a philanthropic planning advisor to donors, prospects and their counselors to produce planned gifts. The Associate Director of Gift Planning will work with individual charitable gift prospects and donors, as well as attorneys, accountants, trust officers, fund managers, and other tax, insurance and financial professionals, to produce current and deferred gifts through:

  • Complex outright gifts
  • Bargain sales
  • Charitable remainder trusts
  • Charitable gift annuities
  • Pooled income funds
  • Charitable lead trusts
  • Wills and various types of non-charitable trusts
  • Gifts of retirement accounts
  • Gifts of life insurance and commercial annuities
  • Gifts-in-kind / Tangible personal property
  • Real estate - e.g. outright and in trusts, retained life estates, whole and partial interests

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

GIFT PLANNING

  • Serve as a philanthropic planning advisor to donors, prospects and their counselors to produce planned gifts (including those listed above).
  • Work with development personnel, faculty and volunteers across the University to support and promote planned gifts to Duke.
  • Produce or assist with draft documents, calculations, proposals and other necessary materials as needed by donors and advisors.
  • Assist in handling various probates, tax and legal matters related to planned gifts.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of 100 gift prospects - track and document efforts to close gifts.
  • Average twelve face-to-face meetings each month with prospects, donors or advisors.

COLLABORATION

  • Assist with in-house training programs on gift planning topics for all frontline development officers at the University.
  • Be available to conduct off campus training programs and seminars related to charitable gift planning.
  • Help create stronger ties with Duke's individual schools, colleges and programs, gaining an in-depth understanding of their programs, the opportunities for giving and the full scope of their activities.
  • Help provide assistance to schools, colleges and programs, including technical/legal expertise, marketing and presentations to boards on gift planning topics.
  • Help insure compliance with applicable legal regulations and university policies.

MARKETING STRATEGIES

  • Assist with the creation and production of a professional advisors newsletter.
  • Assist in updating and continued development of printed and web-based materials to market gift planning opportunities to Duke's diverse constituents.

SPECIAL EVENTS

  • Assist with planning and conducting donor recognition events, including those for Heritage Society members.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in legal, accounting, tax, financial or gift planning field.
  • Outstanding personal and communication skills.
  • The ability to present complex information in a clear and compelling manner. The drive and personality to serve as an advocate for gift planning to internal and external audiences.
  • Outgoing, with the ability to build relationships with individuals and across an institution.
  • Energy, initiative and creativity.
  • Flexibility and the demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast paced environment.
  • Must be able to manage multiple gift negotiations, proposals, closings and other projects in an organized, efficient manner.
  • Excitement about being a part of Duke University and its development program.
  • Excellent written, communication, and relationship building skills.
  • Intelligence, resilience, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Strong personal work ethic and unquestioned personal integrity.
  • Must be willing and able to travel.
